"Military Working Dogs ~ Cooling Vest Project"

Over $1500 raised to support our Military Working Dogs!!

Thanks to a very small group of dedicated club members and our generous local Agility Community, at the Dec AKC Agility trials on December 27-30, 2008, we raised over $1500 that will go directly to support the US Military Working Dog Project as well as our adopted MWD Kennel at Kalsu, Iraq.

On December 27th, TRACS held a sanctioned “B” match following the first trial day. This generated just over $600. Additionally, Trial Chair Susan Cochran orchestrated a great fund raising raffle. With prizes almost exclusively provided by Lorie Abbott and ABBAdog client clubs, another $805 was added to the pot. Finally, in a very generous gesture, judge Terry Culley donated $142.50 of his judging fees to the military working dogs. So, sum total of all this: $1561.50. Of these funds, 50 percent will be sent directly to the Military Working Dog Project whose aim it is to ensure that every MWD in Iraq has a cooling vest, protective boots and goggles to help them during the severe heat of the Iraqi summer months. The remaining 50% goes to help the military working dog kennel at Kalsu, Iraq. In 2008, TRACS “adopted” this specific kennel with the aim of providing minor training aids and equipment they may be having a hard time getting through the military supply system as well as creature comfort items to the dogs and handlers to make life just a bit easier at this bare bones forward operating location.

Our first shipment went to the kennel back in August 2008, as we sent them 12 boxes with everything from dog shampoo, brushes, nail clippers, treats, toys as well as snacks, movies and games for the handlers.

In the words of the then Kennel Master SSG Marcus Faubus: “It took less than 5 minutes from the time the boxes were opened in my office for everything to be gone!” They share what they are given with other nearby kennels. We have a “wish list” from the kennel that we can now start to fulfill. A bit late for Christmas, but I’m sure they won’t mind! If you are interested in helping support this very worthwhile program, contact Kathie Leggett or Susan Cochran.
